In an aquatic environment macrophytes (macroalgae and submersed flowering plants) are usually for a long time exposed to varous kinds of environmental impacts. If the impact is moderate the macrophyte can possible survive in a restricted range. The changed conditions are then reflected as e.g. enhanced contents of nutritients and heavy metals in the plant and in disturbance of central physiological functions such as growth and reproduction. The aim of the project is to study the usefullness of macrophytes (changes in distribution, growth and metal uptake) in assessing environmental impacts in archipelago waters of the Baltic Sea.
